At the end of each week at Hartstrings we look back at the designs for next Fall, budgets and planning, stacks of paperwork, conversations with co-workers… but the best part of my days are now centered around what MORE can we do?! It is so important to look for new ways to impact the world. Easily, one can hold doors for others, say hi and smile at strangers. But on a larger level we can look to find ways to make a difference abroad in countries that are without.
Hartstrings, a company that is driven by these words “celebrating the gift of children,” found an amazing opportunity to connect with the children on the Eastern Cape of South Africa in the urban city of Khayelitsha. Through several connections and networks we were able to develop a relationship with The Baphumelele Children’s Home, a school and home to orphaned children in South Africa.
The name Baphumelele (pronounced: bah-poo-meh-LAY-lay), is a Xhosa word meaning “progress”. The children’s home has been built into preschool caring for roughly 230 children aged three months to six years. The Baphumelele Children’s Home was created as a place of safety for abandoned, abused, neglected or orphaned children, most of whom are either infected with or affected by HIV/Aids.
Hartstrings’ donation brought clothing to the hundreds of children at the Baphumelele Home over the winter holiday and we recently received word and a few photographs that the children of the Baphumelele Home were very excited about their new clothing… especially the dresses that they would be able to wear during their current summer season!
Hartstrings has participated in a variety of charitable organizations in the past; however, this new relationship with the Baphumelele Children’s Home has been extremely rewarding and we are excited to continue with our donations and building a strong relationship with the children of Khayelitsha! Check out the photograph below taken just a few weeks ago of the girls wearing our Hartstrings dresses!
We must also thank the Amandla Ku Lutsha Soccer League and CTCTen for all of their help connecting Hartstrings with the children of South Africa. As we continue to send clothing to the Baphumelele Children’s Home, we will update this page with more heartwarming pictures.
